Substitute Information Sheet
Substitute Change of Status Notice
Substitute teachers are an important link in providing continuous educational opportunities for all children enrolled in Dalton Public Schools. Substitutes fill absences of certified teachers and, on occasion, paraprofessional staff in critical areas of need including prekindergarten and some exceptional student services classrooms. Individuals interested in serving as substitutes must complete an online application whenever the district is accepting new candidates. Applications are posted in the Career Center. Once the application has been reviewed, qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview.
The preferable educational level for substitutes is at least an associate’s degree; however, individuals with a high school diploma or GED may qualify as a substitute at a lower daily pay rate. Substitutes employed by Dalton Public Schools MUST be at least 21 years of age, be certified teachers or have completed a substitute training workshop.
Substitute Training
Due to space limitations, only approved applicants interested in substituting for Dalton Public Schools will be accepted. As part of the pre-registration process, Dalton Public Schools will process a background check, fingerprints and a picture for a photo ID Badge. The fee for the background check and fingerprint processing is $50 and must be paid by money order/cashier's check or cash. All substitutes MUST have a clear background check before being registered for the Substitute Training Workshop and being accepted into the substitute pool.
Qualified applicants who have not been through the pre-registration process prior to the workshop will be scheduled for a future training.
Individuals who have a teaching certificate or a substitute certificate from an approved Georgia Substitute Workshop may submit an application at any time applications are being accepted. Orientation for these individuals will be scheduled separately at various times throughout the year.

AESOP (Automated Education Substitute Operator) – www.aesoponline.com
Dalton Public Schools fills substitute vacancies through an automated substitute system. Although the system most effectively works using an internet web browser, AESOP also has the capability to interact with substitutes by telephone. Each substitute can individualize the program to best meet his or her preferred access method, time, and scheduling needs.
All approved Dalton Public Schools substitutes are registered with AESOP and are provided an ID number and PIN. These numbers are issued from the Human Resources Department, but can be customized by the substitute after initial log-in.
Registration may be completed by phone or by internet log-in. Upon registering, a substitute is able to access and reply to any vacancy posting for which they qualify. Substitutes can answer a specific vacancy by choice, or they can wait to be contacted by telephone by AESOP. Available substitutes are contacted by AESOP in random call order, so if a substitute wishes to work continually, it is most effective to reply to openings rather than wait for a call. Once a substitute has accepted a position – or declined a position – he or she will not be called again that day by AESOP because the system knows the substitute has chosen to not work that day.
