For the past few weeks, all AP Calculus students have been applying knowledge they have obtained this year into a Hot Air Balloon Project. Students design and construct balloons to fly on the day of their finals, and compare the distance flown to the surface area and volume of the balloon. While the balloon are launched from the soccer fields, some have gone far out of sight and are still currently MIA. Pictured: Malaka Awad watches as Mr. Maskarinec inflates the balloon.

RAMOS ANNOUNCED AT GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLAR

RAMOS ANNOUNCED AT GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLAR

Saturday, April 30, 2011

The 2011 Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) recipients have been announced and Jeffrey Ramos has been selected as one of 1000 for the honor.

“We commend you on your strong leadership, community service and academic achievements that contributed to your selection… and very pleased to confer this distinct honor that distinguishes as a Leader for America’s Future,” said Cathy Makunga, Vice President of Scholarship Programs with the Gates Millennium Scholars Program.

French Teacher, Shanda Hester, was one of the nominators for Ramos. “I'm so proud of Jeffrey and so very happy that he's been given this amazing opportunity. He's worked so hard and I feel that he's truly deserving of this honor. This couldn't have happened to a better young man. I've been honored to teach him, to get to know him, and I was happy I could help him in some small way to get this scholarship,” said Hester.

Ramos plans to attend Berry College and major in English and History with a minor in Secondary Education. The GMS program will fund Ramos’s education through masters and doctoral levels if he continues in the field of education.

This year the GMS received over 23,000 applications.

The GMS Program began 1999 with funding from a $1 billion grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential.” (http://www.gmsp.org)

Other GMS recipients from DHS include Tommy Tran (2010), Karen Sanchez (2009), Janet Figueroa (2009), Erica Figueroa (2009), Rocio Jacobo (2008) and Tiffany Taylor (2008).

DHS Overall ACT Score Exceeds State, National Averages

Saturday, April 02, 2011

DALTON, GA - Dalton High School's (DHS) average composite score of 21.7 exceeded both the 2010 state and national averages, and increased as compared to the previous year. In addition, the average content scores of Dalton High's 2010 graduating class exceeded the state averages in all four areas – English, math, reading and science.

"We want all of our students to have the option of college upon graduating from Dalton High," said Debbie Freeman, DHS principal. "Therefore, we provide application and scholarship assistance and we continue to encourage all of our seniors to take the ACT and/or SAT tests. In 2010, we had one of our highest participation years for the ACT."

Ninety-three DHS graduates took the ACT this past year, compared to 51 students five years ago.

DHS 2010 graduates' average ACT scores improved in every content area as compared to the DHS average last year, with the exception of math. For 2010, the average math score decreased two-tenths of a percentage point compared to the average math score the previous year (20.8 in 2010 and 21 in 2009).

"We continue to have two sets of math standards taught in Georgia's schools as the Quality Core Curriculum standards will continue through the class of 2011," Freeman noted. "Students in the graduating class of 2012 have experienced the more rigorous, performance-based math standards, implemented through the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) curriculum, since they were in the sixth grade."

Freeman added that she had reviewed a recent state-level report that indicated mean scores of Dalton Public Schools' high school students on the spring 2010 state-required, end-of-course-tests (EOCT) in Math I and Math II were the 13th highest as compared to the 187 school districts in the state. These two courses incorporate the new GPS math standards for high school and includes concepts of statistics, geometry, Algebra I and Algebra II.

She cautioned that data from state and national standardized tests are only a "snapshot" of students' achievement and must be considered alongside many other types of data before instructional adjustments are made for individual students or school coursework.

"Math continues to be a curriculum focus for our school and for our school district," she said. "One of the conclusions in the ACT report is that 'it is the rigor of coursework—rather than simply the number of core courses—that has the greatest impact on …college readiness.'

"During the past few years, we have consistently increased our rigor in all content areas, including math. As the rigor increases, our faculty continues to have high expectations and they are working hard to offer many layers of math support for all of our students."
