JROTC Seniors Visit North GA Military College

By Stephanie Antillon

It was a two hour drive with eight Dalton High School JROTC seniors to North Georgia Military College in Dahlonega. The cadets were driven to Dahlonega by two National Guard Recruiters: Specialist Hall and Staff Sergeant Williams. Rosa Estrada, Mayra Lara, Rosaura Chavez, Jennifer Medrano, Erik Montalvo, James Campbell, Jose Trejo, and Stephanie Antillon all embarked on this journey with one thing in mind: to see what North Georgia Military College has to offer. As the students first arrived, they were greeted by a Junior Officer who is a Second Lieutenant. The campus was absolutely breathtaking. It was small, and yet gave it a sense of comfort. During the briefing, the cadets listened and talked to Colonel Sweatte, a retiree from the US Army who has his own family history at North GA Military College. All cadets gave their full attention and asked questions concerning their own plans in the future. Rosa Estrada said, “The campus was different than what she expected… she liked the thought of going to school there.” Meanwhile, the seniors were allowed to visit dorms, drill areas, chow hall, post office, and library of the college. It seemed that most students from North Georgia Military College are polite and willing to help visiting students. Most of the seniors became excited at the thought of all the activities and academic expectations from the college. It was an experience that most of these seniors will hope to use when they make their final decisions about college.

JROTC: Making a Difference

“We want to make a difference for our community”. That is what the Dalton High School JROTC Catamount Battalion cadets and other students from the school said while participating in a clean-up project at Albert Rollins Park. The project was part of Make A Difference Day and was sponsored by the United Way of Northwest Georgia and Mohawk Industries. The JROTC program received a grant of $250 to accomplish their mission. “I am very proud of these young men and women for taking the initiative to make the world a better place,” said Command Sergeant Major Vazquez, the JROTC instructor who provided the volunteers with food and drinks. “I was thrilled by all the volunteers that participated, and all the enthusiasm and energy that these kids showed. They did not only come here to clean the park, but they also came here to teach our community about the importance of keeping parks and recreations clean, which also helps our environment, ” said Cadet Command Sergeant Major José Trejo from the JROTC program.
Over 35 volunteers worked on the Al Rollins Park, including the JROTC cadets, parent volunteers, and others that wanted to contribute. They collected a truck full of trash found within the park area. “Most of the garbage was found in the wooded area,” said Yahaira Galagarza one of the JROTC volunteers.
They collected tires, plastic pipes, boxes and all different types of garbage. The volunteers said that they had no idea how all that garbage got there, but that they were happy and proud because they stepped up and decided to make a difference in their community. They also painted over graffiti and cleaned up the landscaping around the playground.
The goal of the volunteers was refreshing the park, however they ended up learning things more valuable: teamwork, initiative, and how to make a  contribution to the community. This is also the goal of the JROTC program: “To motivate young people to be better citizens.”
