Learning Initiatives

Prekindergarten (Pre-K)

Dalton Public Schools offers 16 prekindergarten classes for up to 352 students to begin their academic progress in an elementary school environment. There are 22 children in each class with an elementary certified teacher and a paraprofessional. The Pre-K classes for four-year-olds are primarily funded through state lottery revenue. The program prepares children for kindergarten. More information can be found on the Bright form the Start, Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning website.

Literacy Collaborative

Literacy    Collaborative© is a comprehensive school reform model designed to improve the reading, writing and language skills of elementary and middle school students. The cornerstone of this project is dynamic, long-term professional development. School-based literacy coordinators are trained in research-based methods and then provide on-site training for the teachers in their schools. The goal of this comprehensive effort is to increase the rate of student learning and to raise the level of literacy achievement of all students.

Dalton Public Schools enters its 12th year of the Literacy Collaborative initiative in 2015-2016. The most recent report or our students’ success is available here.

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term  intervention of one‐to‐one  tutoring for the lowest‐achieving  first graders. The intervention  is most  effective  when  it is available  to all students  who  need  it and  is used  as a supplement  to good  classroom teaching.  Nationally,  approximately  75 percent  of  students  who  complete  the  full  12  to  20‐week  intervention  can  meet  grade-level expectations  in reading and writing. Follow-up  studies indicate that most Reading Recovery students also do well on standardized tests and maintain their gains in later years.

Mathematics

Dalton Public Schools employed a district trainer for mathematics to coordinate coaching and professional learning for educators beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. As this initiative is developed, more information will be provided.

STEM

Dalton Public Schools believes in engaging students in Science Technology Engineering and Math. Brookwood School is a state-certified STEM School and was the 12th school in the state to earn the designation. All elementary schools provide designated staff and resources to STEM experiences.

International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate program is a rigorous pre-university program leading to assessments in six subject areas.  It offers a challenging and demanding educational experience across the full curriculum.  Beyond completing college-level courses and examinations, IB students are also required to engage in community service, individual research, and an inquiry into the nature of knowledge.

Authorized as an IB World School in 1999, Dalton High School currently offers the following IB courses: IB English, IB Math, IB Math Studies, IB History of the Americas, IB Chemistry, IB Biology, IB Psychology, IB German, IB French, IB Spanish, IB Latin, IB Visual Arts, IB Music, and Theory of Knowledge.

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.   To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.  These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. The student enrolled in the IB program follows a rigorous 4-year plan to earn the IB Diploma.
