DPS Teams Find Success in BrightSpark Competition
"Students want to be in charge of their learning, can be in charge of their learning and they'll change the world," said Thomason.

After months of hard work preparing their projects for the Bright Spark Design Thinking Competitions, see post here, the four competing DPS teams attended an awards ceremony at the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March 29.

The Dalton High School Team, comprised of Eric Perez and Chris Cruz and led by Jessica Ashlock and Lisa Nicholson, won the High School of the Future Competition's People's Choice Award, due in part to the amount of likes received on their Facebook submission video. The judges said their project, Stonebrooke High School, was "extremely well thought out and engaged the community." DHS competed against five other teams across the Chattanooga area in the competition.

The Roan and Westwood team took home the Most Creative Design Award in the Play to Learn STEM Competition, sponsored by PlayCore, for their project Magic Carpet Kingdom. The team was comprised of Jocelyn Chiesa, Anna Elisa Crow, Vanessa Harrison, Emma Hefner, Leslie Orozco, Evelyn Ortiz, Claudeth Rendon and Grace Ridley. It was led by Amy Sherman and Martha Thomason, and it was coached by Rachel Bray and Ty Miller. The team competed against 10 other teams across the Chattanooga area in the competition.

Perez and Cruz offered opening remarks at the ceremony, and Thomason testified about the incredible experience the competition was for the students. Ridley had the opportunity to announce the winner for the Most Creative Design Category.

"Students want to be in charge of their learning, can be in charge of their learning and they'll change the world," said Thomason.

Each team had to submit a prototype, power point presentation and video of their design. The projects were reviewed by a judging panel with judges from local businesses, an advisory team and prototype reviewers.
