2024 Superintendent Transition & Selection

Communications: 

The Dalton Public Schools Board of Education has commenced the search for a new school superintendent subsequent to the recent announcement made by current DPS Superintendent, Dr. Tim Scott, on Monday, March 18. Dr. Scott disclosed his decision to retire from his current position and transition to the role of Executive Director of GHSA, marking a new chapter in his career.

On Friday, March 22nd, the Board of Education met to develop a plan and define the process for selecting the next Superintendent. The Board recognizes the importance of the Superintendent hire for both the school system and the community. They are dedicated to transparency, keeping stakeholders informed as they aim to appoint the new Superintendent by May, with an initial focus on internal candidates from Dalton Public Schools.

Legal Requirements: By Georgia law (OCGA 50-18-72), the board is required to wait at least 14 calendar days before taking final action on the position.  The 14-day countdown begins when the Board releases appropriate applications and bio-information when the search is narrowed to three or fewer candidates. The board can vote on the appointment at any time after the 14-day period.

Superintendent Finalist 

At the Board of Education meeting on April 15th, the Dalton Public Schools Board of Education selected a sole finalist, Dr. Steven Craft. Pending a 14-day period, as required by Georgia law, the Dalton Public Schools Board of Education anticipates formally appointing Dr. Steven Craft as the next Superintendent of Dalton Public Schools. The Dalton Public Schools Board of Education continues to welcome questions and feedback during the time prior to a final vote being taken on April 30th around 1:00p.m.
