Dalton Public Schools proudly announces the upcoming induction of Steve Hamilton, the wrestling coach at Dalton High School, into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, housed within the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum.
Hamilton is slated to become a member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2024, with a formal induction ceremony scheduled during a banquet at Prairie Links Golf & Event Center in Waverly, Iowa, in June.
"I have been involved in the sport of wrestling my whole life, so it is an honor to be recognized for any contribution I might have made to the sport," Hamilton said. "I loved growing up in the state of Iowa, they have some of the best wrestling fans in the country. I always felt supported by countless people who gave me inspiration to train and compete in the sport of wrestling."
A two-time Iowa high school state champion for Emmetsburg High School in 1985 and 1987, Coach Hamilton went on to excel at the collegiate level, earning the title of a four-time NCAA All-American at Iowa State from 1988 to 1992. Among his accomplishments is a notable NCAA runner-up finish at 150 pounds in 1991. Recognizing his outstanding achievements, Hamilton was honored with induction into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2018.
Prior to joining Dalton High School, garnered notable coaching experience at the University of Northern Iowa, University of Nebraska, and University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Dalton High Athletic Director Ryan Richards said, "Having Steve Hamilton as the head wrestling coach at Dalton High School is an awesome opportunity for our wrestling program and for the students in his classrooms. Steve brings a winner's mentality in every aspect of life. One impressive thing about Steve is how he coaches, not only the wrestlers, but also the coaches and empowers them to lead and coach in practice. He is clearly setting the example of a championship program."
The Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, named after the 1948 Olympic gold medalist Glen Brand from Clarion, Iowa, is situated within the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. Established in 2002, it honors individuals who have significantly impacted wrestling nationally or demonstrated extraordinary contributions to the sport in Iowa.
"Dalton high school is proud of coach Hamilton for his upcoming induction into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa this summer," said Dalton High Principal Dr. Lee Collins. "We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber to be coaching our young people. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from having coached at every level, including the college ranks. He is great man and a great coach. We hope to have him around for a long time."
Beyond his achievements on the mat, Hamilton is a devoted family man. He shares his life with his wife, Erin, and their three daughters, Emma, Maggie, and Avery, along with their son, Billy.
