Dalton Public Schools Board of Education Announces Selection of Superintendent Finalist

Dalton, Georgia - The Dalton Public Schools Board of Education is pleased to announce Dr. Steven Craft as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent of Dalton Public Schools. Dr. Craft brings over 25 years of extensive experience in education, serving in various roles ranging from classroom teacher to district administrator. His commitment to student success, passion for educational leadership, and proven track record of exceptional service make him an outstanding candidate to lead Dalton Public Schools into the future.

Dr. Craft’s journey in the field began as a college student at the University of Georgia, where he discovered his passion for both teaching and coaching. Over the years, Dr. Craft has served in various roles, including nine years as a social studies classroom teacher, four years as an assistant principal/athletic director, 11 years as a district athletic director, and most recently as the Chief of Student Services and Activities in Dalton Public Schools. 

Over the course of his professional journey, Dr. Craft has consistently showcased outstanding leadership abilities and a dedication to creating meaningful transformations within educational settings. His tenure as the Director of Athletics at Fulton County Schools is particularly noteworthy. During this time, Dr. Craft spearheaded initiatives that propelled Fulton County Schools to success in athletics, all while emphasizing the comprehensive growth of students, devising programs fostering staff retention, and providing avenues for leadership development. 

In his current role as Chief of Student Services and Activities at Dalton Public Schools, Dr. Craft has overseen various initiatives to enhance student support, improve school safety, and promote extracurricular engagement. His leadership has been instrumental in implementing strategic initiatives such as creating and implementing the K-12 discipline matrix and multiple athletic policies. 

In his vision for Dalton Public Schools, Dr. Craft emphasizes five core pillars: community, academics, athletics, fine arts, and service/leadership. By leveraging his extensive experience and collaborative leadership style, he aims to unite the district around a common goal of enhancing student achievement and preparing students for success in their academic and personal endeavors. 

Speaking on behalf of the Dalton Public Schools Board of Education, Chairperson Matt Evans expressed confidence in Dr. Craft's ability to lead the district forward. "Today, we are excited to unanimously name Dr. Steven Craft as the sole finalist to be the next Superintendent of Dalton Public Schools. Early in this transition process, our Board decided to look internally for the next Superintendent. From administrators, constituents, and individual Board members the same name kept coming up, Dr. Craft,” said Evans. “After spending considerable time with him through this process as well as observing him for the past year, the Board believes that Dr. Craft's positivity, strong relational skills, collaborative and team-based approach to leadership, and commitment to improve student achievement while preparing them for their best future make him an exceptional finalist to be the next superintendent. Under Dr. Craft's direction and leadership, we believe we can maximize our district's many strengths, accelerate what we are doing well, and simultaneously address areas where improvement and change are needed. Our Board continues to welcome questions and feedback during the time prior to a final vote being taken on April 30th around 1:00p.m.” 

Dr. Craft holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi, Education Specialist from Piedmont college, master's degrees in Educational Leadership and 

Curriculum and Instruction, and Bachelor of Science in Social Science Education from the University of Georgia. His educational background, combined with his extensive professional experience, uniquely positions him to lead Dalton Public Schools into a new era of excellence and innovation. 

Pending a 14-day period, as required by Georgia law, the Dalton Public Schools Board of Education anticipates formally appointing Dr. Steven Craft as the next Superintendent of Dalton Public Schools.
