DPS Welcomes Dr. Robert Shaw as Associate Superintendent of Student Services and Activities

Dalton, GA – Dalton Public Schools proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Robert Shaw as the new Associate Superintendent of Student Services and Activities. Dr. Shaw brings over two decades of extensive experience in education, marked by his commitment to fostering a culture of respect, trust, and open communication.

A distinguished servant leader, Dr. Shaw's career highlights include 13 years as a high school principal, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership and achieved notable milestones in student success. Prior to joining Dalton Public Schools, Dr. Shaw served as the Administrator on Special Assignment in the Office of School Operations at Cherokee County School District, Canton, GA. In this role, he led the Student Services Department, overseeing the implementation of the district's Social Emotional Learning Curriculum and providing support to school counselors and social workers.

During his tenure as Principal at Roswell High School, Dr. Shaw elevated the institution's academic standing, earning recognition as the #15 most challenging high school in Georgia by U.S. News and World Report. Under his leadership, Roswell High School achieved a graduation rate of 93.6%, the highest in five years, and received an "A+" rating from niche.com.

At Riverwood International Charter School, Dr. Shaw successfully increased the four-year graduation rate from 67% to 90.8% and enhanced the International Baccalaureate pass rate. His efforts led to significant improvements in the school's College and Career Readiness Index Score, transitioning it from an "F" to a "B" rating.

Under Dr. Shaw’s leadership as Principal at Hillgrove High School, Dr. Shaw was instrumental in the school being named a School of Excellence by the Georgia Department of Education. Additionally, Hillgrove High School earned recognition on The Washington Post’s 2013 list of Most Challenging Schools and the 2013 U.S. News & World Report list of Best High Schools.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Shaw served in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, where he obtained the rank of E-4 and received an Honorable Discharge.

Dr. Shaw holds a Doctor of Education in School Improvement from the University of West Georgia, along with a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, both from Kennesaw State University. He is certified in Educational Leadership (L-7), Secondary Education: Social Studies, and holds endorsements in Gifted-In-Field and Coaching.

Dr. Shaw's outstanding contributions to education have garnered him prestigious recognition. Notably, he was honored as Principal of the Year by the Central Learning Community in Fulton County Schools in 2016 and by the Cobb School Counselor Association in 2013. Additionally, Dr. Shaw received the esteemed Betty Gray Principal of the Year award from the South Cobb Counsel of the PTSA in 2011.
