Long to Leave Blue Ridge School

Abernathy Named Interim Principal

Christine Long, who has served as the principal of Blue Ridge School since 2019, has announced that she will leave her position effective January 10, 2022. She has accepted another position outside the school district.

The Dalton Board of Education approved Dr. Kyle Abernathy, assistant principal at Blue Ridge School, as the interim principal through the end of the school year. This is Abernathy’s first year with the school and the district.

Before coming to Dalton, Dr. Abernathy worked in the Floyd County Schools in Rome as principal of Cave Spring Elementary School for two years. He also spent three years as assistant principal at Model Elementary in Rome. He has 14 years of experience in education. He also serves as a part-time adjunct professor at Shorter University.

Dr. Abernathy holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA; an educational specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Berry College in Rome, GA; a master’s degree in curriculum from Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI; and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Dalton State College.

Dr. Abernathy said he is looking forward to leading the Blue Ridge staff through the remainder of the school year. “I am amazed and in awe that I have the pleasure of serving the staff and students at Blue Ridge at this capacity where I once trained as a student teacher before becoming an educator,” Abernathy said. “I want our students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders to know that I will embrace them in this journey together with SAS- Service Above Self-- and we will continue building a strong academic, social, and behavioral program here at Blue Ridge.”

Long came to Dalton from Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, where she had served as kindergarten – fifth grade principal at Jackson Elementary School and the district Title I and federal programs coordinator for the district. She has over 16 years of experience in education having worked in Pennsylvania and in Georgia.
