DHS Students Place in State Literary Competition

State Literary ChampionsFour Dalton High School students left the GHSA State Literary Competition 6A as state winners.

Caroline Coleman received first place in Rhetorical Essay.
Georgia Bronson received first place in Extemporaneous Speaking- Domestic.
Hillary Dong received second place in Argumentative Essay.
Keenan Pasqua received 4th place in Oral Performance- Humorous.

Advisor Cindy Wiggins expressed her pride in her students' accomplishments. "They have dedicated a great deal of personal time in preparation for their events and have justly received the rewards of their labor," she said. "Their accomplishments are a testament to the pride they take in reaching their personal goals and the pride they exhibit as Dalton High School students."

This competition allows students to demonstrate literary skills developed over the course of their academic career. Events include domestic and international extemporaneous speaking; argumentative, rhetorical and personal essays; solo, trio and quartet events; and dramatic and humorous oral performances.

The speaking and writing events require students to respond to an undisclosed political or social topic under strict time constraints. These students are judged based on their ability to use language, develop an argument and deliver their argument in a logical, persuasive fashion.

Oral dramatic performances require students to effectively communicate the author's meaning of their selection through vocal and visual techniques. These students must perform their piece based on memory and without props.

"Each of these students worked tirelessly to prepare for his or her event," said Wiggins. "Placing at the state level is not an easy task, as these Catamounts competed against worthy opponents. It is an honor and privilege to work with such exemplary students."
