Dalton Public Schools Dedicates "Dalton Reads!" Mobile Library On Georgia Reads Day

DALTON, Ga. — Dalton Public Schools proudly launched the Dalton Reads! Mobile Library with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, September 22, at the Junior Achievement Center in Dalton, Georgia. The event coincided with Georgia Reads Day, a statewide celebration of literacy.

Superintendent Dr. Steven Craft opened the event by highlighting the importance of expanding literacy access beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community. “The Dalton Reads! Mobile Library is more than a vehicle—it’s a promise to our students and families. By bringing books and resources directly into our neighborhoods, we are ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow as a reader and a leader,” said Craft.

Following his remarks, Ali Finley, Director of Literacy for Dalton Public Schools, introduced the mobile library initiative. She shared that the project was made possible through a $75,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL).“Literacy opens doors to confidence, opportunity, and brighter futures. The Dalton Reads! Mobile Library helps make that possible by placing books directly into the hands of our students and families. This initiative represents our community’s shared belief that every child deserves the gift of reading,” said Finley.

Following the remarks, Dr. Craft, Ms. Finley, Dalton Public Schools staff, Dalton City officials, community partners, and attendees gathered outside for the official ribbon cutting, proudly unveiling the Dalton Reads! van and marking a significant milestone in the district’s commitment to literacy.

A Library on Wheels The Dalton Reads! Van will bring literacy opportunities directly to families and communities across Dalton. The mobile library will:

  • Attend athletic events and school activities to share age-appropriate books and interactive literacy activities.

  • Make scheduled stops at schools, parks, and community spaces, encouraging reading beyond the classroom.

  • Partner with families and local organizations to host story times, literacy workshops, and reading challenges.
