Dalton, Georgia — Dalton Public Schools is proud to announce that Kelli Scheunemann has been named Roan School’s 2024–2025 Teacher of the Year. Scheunemann serves as a Specially Designed Classroom teacher for grades K–2 and has been an educator for more than 30 years, with 25 of those years devoted to the students of Dalton Public Schools.
Scheunemann began her career after discovering a passion for working with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities during a college observation experience. That moment, she said, was the turning point that helped her find her purpose.
“It was inspiring to me, and it was the catalyst in developing a passion for children with special needs,” she reflected. “I knew I was on the right path… I was finding my purpose, and it was exciting.”
Throughout her career, Scheunemann has worked across multiple Dalton schools, building a legacy of compassion, innovation, and dedication. She believes strongly in meeting students where they are and designing instruction that helps each child reach their fullest potential.
“It is my job to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of each student to help develop the best version of themselves,” she said. “I visualize their possibilities and figure out what path I am going to take to achieve it.”
Her classroom is known for being structured yet nurturing—a place where students feel safe, supported, and loved. Scheunemann credits much of her success to strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues, as well as her commitment to continuous learning and thoughtful collaboration.
“My classroom is a safe place for my students, and it is an environment full of love and laughter,” she shared. “Listening is key in my room and respecting the feelings and thoughts of my students.”
For Scheunemann, the rewards of teaching run deep.
“It is rewarding when a student learns how to read… when a student remembers a strategy to regulate emotionally… when a student learns how to go potty or says a single word for the first time,” she said. “It is extremely rewarding when my friends and colleagues chose me this year as Roan’s Teacher of the Year.”
She also sees her role as extending far beyond academics. As an advocate for emotional health and self-regulation, she regularly supports other teachers by sharing strategies that help create positive learning environments.
“I believe building a strong foundation for emotional resilience is key to improving behaviors and to increasing learning,” she noted.
Roan School Principal and district leaders praised Scheunemann for her extraordinary impact on students, families, and staff. Her dedication to helping young learners build strong foundations—academically, socially, and emotionally—has made her a beloved and influential member of the Roan community.
When asked what this honor means to her, Scheunemann expressed deep gratitude.
“All these things and more make me so emotional and so very proud!” she wrote in her application. Being chosen as Teacher of the Year, she said, has been one of the most meaningful accomplishments of her career.
Dalton Public Schools congratulates Kelli Scheunemann on this outstanding achievement and thanks her for her unwavering commitment to students and families.
